Library Program Heads to the Heart of Texas for Summer Reading

This year’s theme, “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” will focus on everything Texas. Students in grades 4-6 will meet at the library Thursday mornings at 8 a.m. for stories and computer scavenger hunt activities, where they will compete to see who is able to find the most answers related to the day’s story time. Children from pre-kinder through grade three will enjoy a special story time on Fridays at 9 a.m.  Registration forms are available at the library front desk. Call 671-3610 for more information. zoom (view flyer)

Play Games at the Library

Customers looking for a cool place to spend an afternoon with family and friends will find a new games table in the library’s teen area. Set pieces for dominoes, chess, and checkers can be checked out at the front desk. Call 671-3610 for information on all library activities and events.

Create a “Make and Take” Gift for Dad

Come into the base library on June 19th and 20th to make a special Father’s Day gift for dad. Our “make and take” table will have all the fixins’ to put together the best gift he’s ever seen. Make it here or take it home to make. Father’s Day is June 21st. Get more information at 671-3610.

Program at Library Discusses the Forces of Nature

Lackland Library once again hosts Dr. Robert Meeks, geologist and professor at St. Philip’s College and the University of the Incarnate Word, for a program that highlights the geological history of San Antonio and how these forces of nature--earthquakes, global warming, and the like, affect our lives in Texas. He’ll also bring along some fossil examples to share with the audience. The program is scheduled for August with a date to be announced. Posters and flyers will be available later at the library with more specific information.

War Movies at Library

The Lackland Library is adding nearly 50 new DVD titles that cover America’s participation in various military conflicts from World War I to the present. The new collection is a true variety; containing documentary as well as feature films, drama as well as comedy, with film stars such as Tom Hanks, Joseph Fiennes, Clark Gable, and Steve McQueen. Though the titles will be integrated with the regular video collection, they will be marked with a new sticker for the next three months to make them easy to identify. For more information about the new collection, call 671-3610.

storytimeStory / Craft hour - Fridays 9am -10am

The Friday story/craft hour is generally geared toward preschoolers. It is a themed program that can include story time, theme related songs, and parent assisted craft projects where the children can take their project home afterwards.

An example day would be a reading of "The Little Red Hen", followed by a song about chickens sung to the tune of "Here we go round the mulberry bush", and then a project that involves pasting together a chicken from pre-cut construction paper. The program is held in the back half of the library. Story hour runs from 9am to 10am.
