Stray Animal Policy
Lackland's stray animal policy is covered in LAFB Instruction 31-201, 11.1-3 which states: "When a domestic animal is found outside and not under direct control of the owner, it is transported to the stray animal facility. Security Foreces will attempt to contact the owner, if the animal has identification, by contacting the LAFB-VTF (Veterinary Treatrment Facility). When the animal is placed in the stray facility, the San Antonio Animal Control will be contacted. The animal will be picked up and transported to SAAC within 72 hours."

Heartworm

Heartworm disease is a very serious and potentially fatal disease transmitted by mosquitoes. The heartworms live in the heart and lungs of dogs and cats. Monthly heartworm preventative medication can be obtained from a licensed veterinarian. Most animals will require a blood test to be sure they do not already carry heartworms. Your pet should remain on heartworm preventative for its entire life and be tested a minimum of every two years. (Heartworm tests are required every two years for pets residing on base.) It is highly recommended for all dogs. Proof of a recent negative heartworm test must be provided before preventative will be sold. Dogs under the age of 6 months can be started on the preventative without being tested. The preventative is dosed on your dog’s current weight, and must be given as directed by the veterinarian.

NOTE: If the heartworm test was accomplished off-base, a veterinary-client relationship must be established before heartworm preventative will be sold.

Prescriptions

Prescription medications are refilled only when prescribed and directed by a military veterinarian. A medical record must be on file reflecting the problem requiring the medication. The veterinarian’s directions to refill the medication must be present before refills are sold.

Health Certificates

Health certificates are available for interstate and overseas travel. They are required for all animals shipped by government or commercial transportation.
Health certificates are valid for ten (10) days from the date of issue.

NOTE: AS SOON AS YOU RECEIVE PCS ORDERS, CONTACT THE VTF FOR SPECIFIC HEALTH CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS. (Some countries require the proper paperwork to be started 6 months in advance.)

PCS/ETS

Do not forget to pick up your pet’s health records in the event that you PCS or ETS. If you no longer own the pet, notify the clinic so the record is transferred or destroyed.

Intra-nasal bordetella should be given twice at a 2-3 week interval and yearly thereafter. The injectable bordetella is recognized as a 6 month vaccine.
